ARCHITECTS TALK - O&O Baukunst
25.05.2022
The architecture firm Ortner & Ortner Baukunst is a German-Austrian architectural office founded in 1987 by Manfred Ortner and Laurids Ortner and now led jointly with Roland Duda, Chritian Heuchel, Florian Matzker, and Markus Penell . O&O Baukunst trace back to the Viennese art scene and architecture group Haus-Rucker-Co from the 60s and 70s. Their focus is on European architecture that combines historical heritage with demands of modernization.
According to Manfred Ortner, future building methods will primarily focus on fulfilling two requirements. The first one obviously will be that all buildings and their construction should focus on being ecologically friendly and materials need to be recyclable. The other one is cities need to achieve a certain level of energy self-sufficiency in order for the whole system to be viable. Furthermore, he emphasizes that while wood offers aesthetics and functionality with sustainable advantages, there are many other recyclable materials that are just as important. For example, recyclable bricks and concrete to name a few. This is where science plays an important role in creating new materials and ways to recycle and minimise waste.
"This awareness of the need for sustainability has developed over time and we have learned a lot that allows us to act now and address this issue." - Manfred Ortner, O&O Baukunst
As for Laurids Ortner, he states that architecture and building methods are becoming similar to those of the automobile industry with their large financial support ad high automation production. With industrialisation, the shift is going towards highly automated manufacturing of goods. The smaller businesses will not survive the cost of upgrading their products to certified and circular products that satisfy high sustainability criteria. In his opinion, we should think of sustainable architecture as a whole not just the materials used. In Europe, we have made great stride in this field, we can present many structures of sustainable architecture and lead the new generation and other countries to follow our example.
